She lets us hear the voice of the people in the other 'declarations' of 1776: the local resolutions-most of which have gone unnoticed in the past two centuries-that explained, advocated, & justified Independence and undergirded Congress' work. In Maier's hands, the Declaration of Independence is brought close to us. She describes the transformation of the 2nd Continental Congress into a national government, unlike anything that preceded or followed it, and with more authority than the colonists would ever have conceded to the British Parliament the great difficulty in making the decision for Independence the influence of Paine's Common Sense, which shifted the terms of debate and the political maneuvers that allowed Congress to make the momentous decision. It is truly 'American Scripture', and Maier tells how it came to be-from the Declaration's birth in the hard and tortuous struggle by which Americans arrived at Independence to the ways in which, in the 19th century, the document itself became sanctified. Pauline Maier shows us the Declaration as both the defining statement of our national identity & the moral standard by which we live as a nation. From one of today's foremost authorities on the era of the American Revolution, the most important book on the Declaration of Independence since Carl Becker's classic study published seventy-five years ago.

This is a mermaid book, so Neptune (a.k.a. Since my thoughts on this book are pretty 50/50, I’ll start with what I disliked so we can end on a positive note. One of my younger sisters and I discovered this book at the thrift store a few weeks ago, and the gorgeous cover and quirky title intrigued us both. I gave it 2 stars for concept and an overall positive message about families, but the book was predictable, whiny, and not one that I plan to read any sequels to. Would it really have been THAT hard for the author to look at a measuring tape before describing their 7th grade heroine as three feet eight inches tall? My first graders are taller than that! The final straw for me was when the author described Emily's height. I understand that the author might be trying to show his imperfections, but how can someone be a god, when they're just as petulant as the seventh grader who's lecturing them? I guess I expect more from my gods than individuals who get blustery over being addressed as "sir". Neptune, although he does the right thing in the end, was a disappointment too. The speech Emily gives Neptune, the sea god, at the end is suppose to be a moving defense of love and families but came across as trite. The plot idea is interesting - a seventh grade girl finds out she's a mermaid when her legs become a tail the first time she's submerged in water for swim lessons - but the writing itself is weak (unless you like books with manipulative "you aren't my friend unless you do this" girl talk). Not until now-this moment he has waited a long time for.Kit grew up as a street-rat, an unlicensed human who would never be more than a slave for whichever master owns him. Significant differences were consistently found between the combined MA samples and the AA sample AAs had higher rates of high EE, more critical comments, less warmth, less EOI, and a high EE profile comprised more of criticism/hostility. Only caregiver warmth differed for the 2 MA samples MA 1980 had higher warmth than MA 2000. Chi-square and path analyses revealed no significant differences between the 2 MA samples in rates of high EE, critical comments, hostility, and emotional over-involvement (EOI). We examined the distribution of expressed emotion (EE) and its indices in a sample of 224 family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia pooled from 5 studies, 3 reflecting a contemporary sample of Mexican Americans (MA 2000, N=126), 1 of an earlier study of Mexican Americans (MA 1980, N=44), and the other of an earlier study of Anglo Americans (AA, N=54). There were definitely twists (especially the beginning, because you know, I didn’t read the description again before I started) and turns, but nothing that I couldn’t predict when the plot started turning towards them. I enjoyed this book, but there were parts of it that were predictable. I was so shocked and it ended up being really awesome because it hooked me. When I bought the book I didn’t re-read the description because I didn’t want any expectations so I was totally thrown into left field when the ES happened. This storm ends up connecting her with a Fae named Ryker and together they must find the answers they need. Seattle goes down by an “Electric Storm (ES)” as the citizens call it, destroying everything in the city. Which if we are all being honest here, working for a secret agency never spells good news. So she is very valuable to the DMG because she is the one who can tell Fae from humans. Zoey is a Seer and she can see Fae’s auras. But this isn’t the most peculiar thing about her. She has had a hard life, being thrown from foster home to foster home throughout her life making her have incredibly rough experiences in life. Fae is a broad term that pretty much covers anything supernatural – vampires, fairies, wanderers, sprites, etc. Zoey Daniels works for a top secret government agency called the DMG (Department of Molecular Genetics) and she hunts and collects Fae. This was my first (real) Adult book and it was pretty good. I was the collected, the hunted – a specimen to test. |
